Security SetUp is produced and sold
by IDP Computer Security. IDP Computer Security is a small
independant consultant company in Denmark. The company is
run as a side buisness (hence it is not a full time company),
during day time I (Michael Møller) work for the Royal Danish
Homeguard as a full time IT-Consultant
The Security SetUp story begin in
mid 1997, I used a lot of my time setting up computers for
friends family etc. etc. but after a week or so people had a
tendency to trash the computer setup. In the good old days
(Windows 3.11) you could make some changes to the ini files
within the windows directory that would prevent people from
messing up the Windows configuration, however these settings did
not work under Win 95/98/NT. I did some research and
discovered how Microsoft infact had included some security
options under Windows 9X / NT, actually I discovered that there
was already a few products on the marked that could deal with
this problem, however these products was fairly expensive
$49-$200. The solution to my problems was that I decided to
create my own security setup software (hence the name Security
SetUp).
In August 1997 I released
Security SetUp (V1.00). I did not expect much feedback, so I
decided to release the software as freeware with the condition
that you had to register (free, but required), this way I could
keep track of how widely spread my software would become. ...
BIG MISTAKE..... During 1997-1998 I recived more than
12.000 registrations, this was about 11.700 more than I had
expected and did cause some problems, it is hard work supporting
software over the internet especially in that scale...
Along came Windows 98 and some
new features needed to be added to Security SetUp, unfortenatly
my time was fairly limited due to my job as an IT-Consultant, in
August / September 1998 I finnaly released a beta version of
Security SetUp II and with the skilled help of my betatesters
(thanks guys) I was ready for final launch on October 1st 1998.
Security SetUp II - Light is
released as shareware, not because I want fame and fortune, but
as I have used a lot of time supporting / developping this
software I think its fair I get a little in return. I have
had to rent web-hotel space and upgrade my phone connection (ADSL), thus it has not been without cost for me. I think
that the pricing of Security SetUp is fair, if people dont want
to pay they can just use the Poledit.exe program supplied
(freely) by Microsoft (at the loss of the userfriendly interface
:-)..
